Between roughly Beach 32nd and Beach 59th, Edgemere is the part of the peninsula with the most sky. Wide blocks, big open parcels, and a straight run east to our door on Augustina Avenue. That drive is short enough that dropping the car off and getting back to your day is realistic, and short enough that we do not think twice about sending the van instead if the glass is bad enough that the car should stay where it is.
The vehicles we see from here cover a lot of ground: household cars parked on the street or in open lots, work vans doing trades along the Rockaway Freeway, and the pickups and flatbeds that come with the construction going on at the western edge of the neighborhood. Whatever the vehicle, the process is the same. Edgemere occupies the middle-eastern stretch of the peninsula and it is unusually exposed, with far more undeveloped land than anywhere else out here. Parking is genuinely easier here than at the Beach 116th end: open lots, driveways and curbside space that is not fought over. Wind is the whole story in Edgemere. With so few buildings between the ocean and Jamaica Bay, sand does not stay put; it crosses roadways, banks against curbs and gets picked up again by traffic. Blown grit is what pits and hazes a windshield here, and hazing is why so many Edgemere drivers first notice a chip when the sun is low and everything scatters. Salt travels the same way and settles on parked cars overnight. On top of that, the construction traffic along the western parcels throws stone, and a loaded truck ahead of you on the Rockaway Freeway does the rest. A fresh chip left through one cold snap is usually a crack by the following week.
Run east on Beach Channel Drive, or take the Rockaway Freeway under the elevated line, and stay with it until the road feeds into the Far Rockaway street grid near Mott Avenue. From there Augustina Avenue is a turn or two away and the whole trip is around ten minutes when the peninsula is quiet. Coming from the ocean blocks, cut north to whichever of the two through roads you are nearest instead of weaving the numbered streets. If the windshield is in no state to make even that drive, call and the van will come to the lot where the car sits.
