What we see from Arverne is heavy on daily commuters. Cars that run the length of the Rockaway Freeway every morning, out over the bridges and onto the mainland, then back at night to a spot with nothing between it and the ocean. That is a lot of highway grit followed by a lot of standing in salt air. The ocean is two blocks from most Arverne front doors, and the spray that comes off it on a windy day does not stop at the boardwalk. Salt mist lands on the roof and runs down the glass, then dries into a film that holds moisture against the seal. Meanwhile sand from the beach blows inland across Rockaway Beach Boulevard and collects in the cowl at the base of the windshield, where wipers pick it up and drag it back and forth. The Rockaway Freeway is the alternative and usually the quicker of the two when the school runs are on, since it has fewer lights. From the ocean-side streets, cut north on one of the numbered beach streets rather than following Rockaway Beach Boulevard the whole way. Give it twelve minutes on a normal morning, a bit more on a July weekend when everyone is heading for the sand. If the crack is across your line of sight, leave the car and let the van come to you instead.
