There are two Rockaway Beaches and we work on both. From October to April it is a residential neighborhood of a few thousand households where cars sit on the same streets all week. From Memorial Day onward the beach blocks fill with day-trippers, the boardwalk concessions open, and every curb between Beach 84th and Beach 108th is spoken for by ten in the morning. We are fifteen minutes east on Beach Channel Drive, which in February is nothing and on a hot Saturday is a different proposition. That is the honest reason to book ahead here rather than turn up. Whatever the season, the process is the same: we confirm what glass your car takes, quote the number before we start, bill a comprehensive claim direct when the policy covers it, and warranty our workmanship for as long as you own the vehicle. Rockaway Beach runs from about Beach 73rd Street west to Beach 108th, taking in Hammels at the eastern end. Shore Front Parkway is the wide road along the ocean side; Rockaway Beach Boulevard runs parallel a block inland; Beach Channel Drive carries the bay side and the traffic coming off the Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge, which lands on the peninsula in the middle of this neighborhood. The shuttle and A trains stop at Beach 90th, Beach 98th and Beach 105th Streets, all a short walk from the boardwalk. Parking is the defining local fact: driveways exist on the residential blocks but the streets closest to the sand turn over constantly in summer, and a car left in a beach spot all day picks up more grit than a car in a garage does in a year. In winter the same streets are quiet enough to work on comfortably.

This is the most exposed neighborhood we cover in the middle of the peninsula, and the beach is directly upwind. Fine sand crosses Shore Front Parkway with any onshore breeze, banks along the curbs and gets thrown up again by passing traffic, so windshields collect a steady sandblasting that shows up as haze long before anything cracks. Salt comes with it and settles into the molding channel, where it holds moisture against the pinch weld and starts the corrosion that later makes a clean glass removal harder. Then there is the bridge traffic. Cars coming off Cross Bay Boulevard have just run a long stretch of open road, and the stones they carry get flicked at whatever is behind them. A summer chip plus a January cold snap is the classic Rockaway Beach crack.
Take Beach Channel Drive east and stay on it. It runs the bay side of the peninsula all the way through Arverne and Edgemere and feeds into the Far Rockaway street grid, where Augustina Avenue is a short turn off Mott Avenue. The Rockaway Freeway under the elevated line is the alternative if the Drive is backed up near the bridge landing. From the boardwalk blocks, come north on one of the numbered beach streets first rather than working east along Rockaway Beach Boulevard through every light. Reckon on fifteen minutes off-season and considerably more on a beach Saturday, which is exactly when the van is the better answer.

In July and August most Rockaway Beach customers take the van, because the drive east is slow and you would lose the parking space you came home to.
