Nowhere else we serve has one road in and one road out. Cross Bay Boulevard is it, with a bridge at each end, and that single fact shapes how we handle glass work for the island. What they share is exposure. Jamaica Bay is on both sides of every street, tide water reaches the pavement more often than anywhere else in the city, and salt gets into everything. Broad Channel is the only inhabited island in Jamaica Bay, a narrow strip with Cross Bay Boulevard running its length and short numbered roads branching east and west off it toward the water. The Joseph P. Addabbo Memorial Bridge carries the boulevard north toward Howard Beach; the Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge carries it south to the Rockaway peninsula. The A train stops at Broad Channel in the middle of the island. North of the houses, the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge takes up most of the remaining land. Many properties sit on the water with bulkheads, docks and small boats, and a good number of homes have been raised on piles. Parking is generally off-street, which suits mobile work, but the lower roads take standing salt water on high tides and after onshore blows, and it drains away slowly.

Tidal flooding is the mechanism that makes Broad Channel different. When bay water comes up over the low roads and then recedes, it leaves salt and fine silt across the pavement, and for days afterward every vehicle driving those blocks throws that mixture up at the glass and into the cowl. Salt that ends up in the molding channel around a windshield keeps the metal underneath permanently damp, and that is where the corrosion starts that shows up years later as a rust line under the glass. Add constant humidity off the water on both sides and any open chip stays wet, which is the worst state for it. The impact damage itself mostly comes from the boulevard and the two bridge approaches, where traffic runs faster than anywhere on the island.
Take Cross Bay Boulevard south over the Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge, which lands you on the peninsula in the middle of Rockaway Beach. Turn east onto Beach Channel Drive and stay on it through Arverne and Edgemere until the road feeds into the Far Rockaway street grid, where Augustina Avenue is a turn off Mott Avenue. That is around twenty minutes when the bridge is clear and noticeably longer on a summer weekend. The alternative is north over the Addabbo bridge and around by the Belt Parkway and the Nassau Expressway, which is only worth it if the southern bridge is backed up.
