The physics of a chip is simple and unforgiving. A stone breaks the outer sheet of the laminate and leaves a void that immediately starts collecting air, water and dust. Every hot afternoon and cold night flexes the glass around that void until a leg runs out of it. The repair reverses the process while it is still possible: clean the break, pull a vacuum on the cavity with a bridge tool, inject optical resin, cure it under ultraviolet light, polish the face flush.
Done in time, that restores the strength of the laminate and most of the clarity, and it stops the break from travelling any further. A faint mark normally stays where the impact was, which is the honest version rather than the sales version.
